Students are eligible for Fee Waivers through the College Board and ACT if they participate in the Free or Reduced Lunch Program at Shelby High School. Students are eligible for a waiver to take the SAT and/or ACT. To receive the waiver a parent must complete the “Sharing Information Form” available in the guidance office. This form gives us permission to indicate to the testing company that the student participates in the Free and Reduced Lunch program. No other information is shared.
Once the sharing form is completed the counselor will verify the information. The student may begin to complete the registration online. Once the sharing form is completed, Mrs. Heffelfinger will complete the school part of the waiver and return the waiver to the student to complete the online registration process. Students are eligible for 2 fee waivers for the SAT or the ACT – usually one the junior year and one the senior year, though they can both be used the senior year. Students who do not show up for a test, or lose their waiver, are not eligible for additional waivers.
AFTER a student has registered for the ACT or SAT using a fee waiver, the student is then eligible for fee waivers for college application fees. A student is eligible for 4 application fee waivers. Most colleges will allow you to use waivers with online applications. A few require you to use a paper form if you use a fee waiver. Some colleges do not accept any fee waivers (NC A & T and Elizabeth City State). After completing the application online, the payment options will come up. If fee waiver is an option, click on that part. Then print the confirmation page. Bring the confirmation page to guidance and Mrs. Heffelfinger will complete the fee waiver process. If fee waiver is not a payment option, click on Pay by Check. Print out the confirmation page and bring it to the guidance office. Mrs. Heffelfinger will complete the fee waiver process. If neither check nor fee waiver is an option, you will need to download a paper application in or to apply to that college using a waiver.
